abstract = "The Antonio river sub-basin is part of the Contas river basin. It
is located in the southern center of the state of Bahia, between
the geographic coordinates 14º00 at 14º560 S and 41º280 at
42º480W, in the physiographic region of the semi-arid region. This
study aims to characterize the land use in the sub-basin of the
Antonio River by applying geoprocessing techniques. The following
steps were hold in this study: fieldwork, cartographic base
selection, digital processing of orbital images and slope map
generation. Furthermore, five levels were obtained during the land
use and cover: non - agricultural anthropic areas (14.59 km ²
area, 0.2%), areas with natural vegetation (2420.86 km ², 37.2%),
pasture (4062.13 km², 62%), water - dams or dam lakes (4.15 km²,
0.06%) and other areas (0.54%). The areas where there is the most
concentrated presence of natural vegetation are the areas with the
highest slope gradient (above 20%) and the fewer impacts generated
by anthropic use. The occupation of man, especially in the urban
areas, is found in the areas of declivity classes with a lower
                         gradient (below 3%).",
